Environmental enrichment and refinement for non-human primates kept in research laboratories

This resource disseminates information on all aspects of species-appropriate housing and handling of captive nonhuman primates.

Environmental enrichment is the provision of stimuli that promote the expression of species- appropriate behavioural and mental activities in an under-stimulating environment.

Refinement is the attempt to enhance animal welfare and control extraneous variables that may increase research data variability.

This is a photographic documentation and literature review created by Viktor Reinhardt, who has also constructed a database entitled Refinement of Housing and Handling Conditions and Environmental Enrichment for Animals Kept in Laboratories, which also covers non-human primates.

Viktor Reinhardt manages the Laboratory Animal Refinement Forum (LAREF).
