Description: This video film (approximately 45 minutes) demonstrates the basic principles and techniques. This film should be studied closely before starting microsurgery on the laboratory rat: (Micro-)surgical instruments and their handling; suture materials and their handling; use of homeothermic blanket systems and bipolar coagulator; preparation of special aids, e.g. cannulae, swivels and adapters; making knots, running and interrupted sutures; handling and shaving the animal; giving injections in veins, using tail or penile vein); taking blood samples; administration of anaesthesia: Injectable (intraperitoneal, intramuscular, subcutaneous) and Inhalation anaesthetics using a anaesthetic machine; opening and closing the abdominal wall; subcutaneous tunneling of cannulae and their fixation on the crown of the head.
