Pulsating Organ Perfusion (Surg)

Pulsating Organ Perfusion (P.O.P) was developed for simulation of operations in minimally invasive surgical techniques (using waste organs) and opens up new perspectives in laparoscopy/thoracoscopy training. The central artery of animal organs or organ complexes is catheterized and connected to the pump of the P.O.P. simulation trainer. The perfusion medium (coloured tap water) in the pelvitrainer is conveyed into the organ by the pump. The pump works with an electronically controlled frequency of approximately 65 per minute and is pressure-controlled (maximum pressure is approximately 140 mmHg). The organs are supported on a perforated metal grid. The perfusion fluid passes back into the simulation trainer via side branches of the arteries, veins and parenchymal lesions. The operations can be carried out under most realistic conditions on animal organs or organ complexes with the P.O.P. simulation trainer: abdominal surgery (liver, gallbladder, small intestine, colon, spleen); thoracic surgery (heart, lungs, aorta); urological surgery (kidney, ureter, adrenal); vascular surgery (aorta, arteries, veins); and gynecological surgery (adnexae, cysts). P.O.P. simulates all types of haemorrhages (parenchymatous, capillary, arterial, venous). It is therefore possible to master both standard operations and haemorrhagic complications. The exercises can be repeated as often as desired and almost without any time limitations. The results can be checked immediately. All technologies familiar to clinical work such as high frequency (unipolar, bipolar), lasers, ultrasound dissector, aquadissector etc. can be used in the P.O.P. simulation trainer. Training workshops are arranged.

Suitable for experimenting with new techniques and enables the results to be checked immediately. P.O.P is recommended by the AMIC (Working Group on Minimally Invasive Surgery). Professor Gerhard Szinicz and his staff received the 1993 Felix Wankel Animal Protection Research Prize (Ludwig Maximilian University of Münich) for the concept and idea of this innovative method of training.

A Demo of the P.O.P. Trainer (CD-ROM) may be borrowed for up to 6 weeks through the Alternative Loan System of the International Network for Humane Education (InterNICHE), free of charge, but return postage must be paid by the person who borrowed the product. Please note that there are practical limitations on where some items can be sent. Please contact loansystem@interniche.org and see https://www.interniche.org for more information.
