Making Lives Easier for Animals (8073)

This publication provides abridged conversations from LAREF containing practical tips and commentary on animals in experimental laboratories. Based on the first-hand experiences of 62 animal technicians, 38 research workers and 13 veterinarians, this edition presents ways to improve housing and handling conditions for animals in research facilities. Topics include the human-animal relationship, pair formation and housing of monkeys, environmental enrichment for rabbits, bedding for rodents, exercise for dogs, adoption of animals after research completion and minimizing stress reactions during procedures. This publication is a collection of electronic discussions that took place on the Animal Welfare Institute's Laboratory Animal Refinement & Enrichment Forum (LAREF) between October 2002 and May 2007. The forum serves the international animal care and animal research community to promote animal welfare and improve scientific methodology by avoiding or minimizing stress and distress resulting from husbandry and handling practices.
