The mission of the 3Rs-Centre Utrecht Life Sciences (ULS) is to stimulate the development, acceptance and implementation of methods which can Replace, Reduce and Refine animal experiments.
The centre facilitates the 3Rs in education and animal research in many ways by providing information and advice about 3Rs models. An important information source managed by the 3Rs-Centre ULS is the 3Rs-database programme, which comprise three websites at the moment: humane-endpoints.info, interspeciesinfo.com, fcs-free.org). The centre’s communication activities involve providing information through its website, and publishing newsletters roughly 10 times per year about the latest national and international developments regarding the 3Rs. Education goals are achieved by participating in relevant master courses, for example in the veterinary education programme, and the course on Laboratory Animal Science. The centre also provides expertise in national and international bodies (LERU and ETPLAS) on the subject of education and training in laboratory animal science. Furthermore, the 3Rs-Centre ULS is involved in the Utrecht Advanced In Vitro Methods (U-AIM) hub.
The centre is affiliated with Utrecht Life Sciences and provides information and advice to the Animal Welfare Body of both Utrecht University and the University Medical Centre in Utrecht.
The centre is part of the Department of Animals in Science and Society, faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University. This department focuses on issues pertaining to animal welfare, in the broadest sense, and informs scientists as well as the public about these issues.
