The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), founded in 1981, is part of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. CAAT promotes humane science by supporting the creation, development, validation, and use of alternatives to animals in research, product safety testing, and education. CAAT seeks to effect change by working with scientists in industry, government, and academia to find new ways to replace animals with non-animal methods, reduce the numbers of animals necessary, or refine methods to make them less painful or stressful to the animals involved.

A timeline of CAAT's history

CAAT has a sister organisation based at the University of Konstanz, Germany, called CAAT-Europe.

CAAT managed Altweb, the Alternatives to Animal Testing Web Site until it was closed in 2019, when some of its content was added to the CAAT website.
The journal ALTEX is the official organ of CAAT, CAAT-Europe, the Doerenkamp-Zbinden chairs, EUSAAT and t4.
